Code of Conduct for North Canoe Elementary
This applies while at school, at school related activities, and in other circumstances where engaging in the activity will have an impact on our school environment.
North Canoe Elementary has a conduct code designed to provide a safe and caring school environment in which our students can learn and thrive. This code is grounded in a set of guiding principles based on students’ rights and responsibilities:
Students are expected to act in a safe, responsible and respectful manner and to treat others with politeness and consideration.
Rights and Responsibilities as a Student:
· I have a RIGHT to learn. It is my RESPONSIBILITY to listen to instructions, work quietly, complete assignments and not disturb others.
· I have a RIGHT to hear and be heard. It is my RESPONSIBILITY to listen quietly when others are speaking.
· I have a RIGHT to be treated respectfully. It is my RESPONSIBILITY to treat others respectfully.
· I have a RIGHT to be safe. It is my RESPONSIBILITY to speak and act in a way that contributes to a safe and caring school environment.
In Reference to the BC Human Rights Code:
North Canoe Elementary School promotes the values expressed in the BC Human Rights Code respecting the rights of individuals in accordance with the law – prohibiting discrimination base on race, color. ancestry, place of origin, religion, marital status, family status, physical or mental disability, sex or sexual orientation – in respect of discriminatory publication and discrimination in accommodation, service and facility in the school environment.
The school will treat seriously, behaviour or communication that discriminates based on race, color, ancestry, place of origin, religion, marital status, family status, physical status, physical or mental disability, sex or sexual orientation (prohibited grounds set out in the BC Human Rights Code).

Minor Behaviour Issues and Consequences:
These behaviours are handled by the classroom teacher or the attending adult.
Step 1: Verbal reminder to the student of the expected, appropriate behaviour
Step 2: Verbal reminder to the student of the expected, appropriate behaviour
Classroom teacher informed
Step 3: Verbal reminder to the student of the expected, appropriate behaviour
Classroom teacher informed
*Restitution by the student
Natural consequence applied by the adult
Home contact made by the Classroom teacher in consultation with the attending adult
Step 4: Office Thinking Paper completed and Principal (or designate) informed.
More Serious Issues:
These behaviours are handled initially by the attending adult, but are referred to the Principal if they become chronic.
Step 1: Verbal reminder to the student of the expected, appropriate behaviour. If they become chronic:
Classroom teacher informed
*Restitution by the student
Natural consequence applied by the adult
Home contact made by the Principal or Teacher, in consultation with the attending adult
Principal in consultation with those involved determines consequences and course of action:
*Restitution by the student
“May” include any of the following depending on circumstances
*Restitution
Natural and logical consequences
Parent / Teacher / Principal / Student meeting
In-school suspension / Out of school suspension
School Based Team Meeting
Serious Issues:
These behaviours are immediately referred to the Principal.
Verbal reminder to the student of the expected, appropriate behaviour
Classroom teacher informed
Attending adult notifies the Principal
Principal determines with those involved consequences and the course of action:
*Restitution by the student
Consequences become greater each time a child requires intervention.
“May” include any of the following depending on circumstances:

Natural and logical consequences
Parent / Teacher / Principal / Student meeting
In-school suspension
School Based Team Meeting
Suspended pending District Hearing
Special consideration may apply to students with special needs, if they are unable to comply with this Code of Conduct due to having a disability of intellectual, physical, sensory, emotional, or behavioural nature.
